Acomplia by Sanofi Aventis
Acomplia (Rimonabant) is developed by a
French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis. Acomplia
active ingredient is Rimonabant. It is a "selective CB1 endo-cannabinoid
receptor antagonist". In layperson's language, this means
that it blocks the body's natural cellular response to certain
events, including the intake of food.
Sanofi Aventis
Sanofi Aventis, the current developer of Acomplia and owner of
the Acomplia trademark, began human trials in 2002. Sanofi-Aventis
believes that rimonabant can not only curb appetite, thus reducing
weight, but also improve metabolic / cardiovascular risk in obese
people, as well as curb the desire to smoke (while simultaneously
helping prevent appetite increase, and thus weight gain, that
often comes along with quitting smoking).
Acomplia - Zimulti (Rimonabant)
The
drug, marketed in Europe as Acomplia, will be sold in the United
States as Zimulti if approved by the FDA.
Rimonabant is currently being sold in the United Kingdom by Sanofi-Aventis
and in Denmark by Sanofi-Synthelabo under the trade name Acomplia.
You may also see it referred to as "Zimulti," another
trademarked name apparently being considered by Sanofi-Aventis
for the marketing of rimonabant. It could also be referred to
as "Accomplia" or any other approved name that Sanofi-Aventis
chooses to use for its marketing campaign, when and if rimonabant
is approved for sale. The only certain name is its chemical name,
rimonabant.
